Neurological rehabilitation after childhood stroke

When a child suffers a stroke , parents face one of the hardest pieces of news they can receive. However, there is a fundamental difference compared to adults that offers real hope: a child’s brain is much more plastic, meaning it has a much greater capacity to reorganize itself and create new neural connections to compensate for the damaged areas.

This capacity is called neuroplasticity, and it is the foundation of all neurological rehabilitation for children. The earlier rehabilitation treatment begins, and the more intensive and specialized it is, the better the results.

When should rehabilitation begin?

Rehabilitation should begin as soon as possible, ideally within days of the stroke, once the child is medically stable. Do not wait for the child to “recover on their own”: the developing brain responds best to therapeutic stimulation in the first weeks and months after the injury.

Time is neuroplasticity • The window of greatest neuroplasticity is the first 3-6 months after a stroke • Early rehabilitation reduces the severity of long-term sequelae • The intensity of treatment directly influences the prognosis • The earlier the intervention, the greater the functional recovery

What areas does neurological rehabilitation in children address?

Neurological physiotherapy

Neurological physiotherapy, based on the updated Bobath Concept, focuses on restoring movement, postural control, balance, and coordination. In children, it is adapted to the motor development needs of each age group, integrating play as a fundamental therapeutic tool.

The goals include reducing spasticity, improving trunk and limb control, preventing joint deformities, and enabling the child to move around as independently as possible.

Occupational therapy

Occupational therapy focuses on the recovery of daily living activities: eating, dressing, washing, writing, and playing. In children, particular emphasis is placed on restoring function to the affected upper limb and reintegrating them into age-appropriate activities and school life.

Speech therapy

Stroke can affect language , both in its comprehension and expression (childhood aphasia), speech articulation (dysarthria), or the ability to swallow (dysphagia). Speech therapy specializing in pediatric neurology addresses all these areas with techniques adapted to the child’s age and individual needs.

Cognitive rehabilitation

Cognitive impairments following childhood stroke are common and can affect attention, memory, executive functions, and school learning. Neuropsychological and cognitive rehabilitation addresses these functions to help the child successfully reintegrate into their academic life.

Psychological care and family support

A stroke affects not only the child, but the entire family . Psychological support is essential for both the child (who may experience anxiety, depression, or adjustment difficulties) and their parents and siblings. At Rehabot, we integrate psychological care as part of our comprehensive approach .

The Bobath Concept in Child Rehabilitation

At Rehabot, we apply the Bobath Concept , an updated neurological rehabilitation method supported by neuroscience that focuses on re-educating movement, improving postural control, and facilitating overall functional recovery . This approach is especially effective in children because it works from normal movement and continuously adapts to the patient’s progress.

Long-term rehabilitation goals

  • Recovery of mobility and motor function
  • Reintegration into the education system with the necessary support
  • Speech and communication recovery
  • Independence in daily living activities
  • Emotional well-being and quality of life of the child and their family

Why choose Rehabot for your child’s rehabilitation?
